New Crowned Hope
New Crowned Hope is a festival, director Peter Sellars and his collaborators are developing by invitation of the City of Vienna to celebrate the 250th birthday of Mozart. The festival title is inspired by the name of the Masonic lodge “Zur neugekrönten Hoffnung”, co-founded by the composer in the last weeks of his life.
Mozart spent the last decade of his life in Vienna. His revolutionary and progressive subject matter made it difficult for him to obtain commissions here in his last years, resulting in trips abroad in search of employment. He died with many debts and was buried anonymously in a mass grave.
Three great late masterpieces The Magic Flute, La clemenza di Tito and Requiem, were written during Mozart’s final year. Artists from diverse cultures in the fields of music drama, dance, film, concerts, visual arts, and architecture were invited to develop new projects responding to the themes of these three works: Magic and transformation, truth and reconciliation, and ceremonies for the dead.
Projects at the interface of art and social action including refugees and homeless populations are evolving in The Next Vienna.
The Tables of New Crowned Hope recognizes farmers and chefs as artists and will affirm and extend Vienna’s role in the organic food movement, leading towards a sustainable future.
The future that was the intensely heartfelt focus of Mozart’s aspirations during his last days on earth has become our present.
